Middle Peninsula and Lower Northern Neck Schools

Middle Peninsula and lower Northern Neck public schools are required to implement the four basic principles of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). This Act requires: stronger accountability for results, increased flexibility and local control, expanded options for parents, and an emphasis on teaching methods that have been proven to work. Signed into law on January 8, 2002 by President George W. Bush, and passed by overwhelming majorities of Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. Congress, this Act focuses on the role of parents, educators, local leaders and communities in public education and a strong foundation in reading, math, and science.

Organization

A local school board governs each county school. Each school system is a financially dependent division. Part of the school system budget comes from the County Board of Supervisors, and Commonwealth of Virginia. County schools are administered by a division superintendent, an assistant superintendent, school principal and assistant principal, director for special education and federal programs, technology specialist, social worker, school psychologist, gifted coordinator, maintenance supervisor, transportation supervisor and food service supervisor.
